Cluster and Battery

First remove the little Emblen in the center of the steering wheel, with a little flat screwdriver,- next remove the bolt underneath it - then remove the washer. There are three screws at the top of the instrument cluster - remove them. Now you have to pull out the cluster - it's easiest if you remove the steering wheel, but if you extend the column fully you get get it to come out the driver's side. Before you try to pull the cluster out you have to remove the three large plugs and the two small ones behind the speedo. The small ones pull straight down. On the others, pry up the black clip gentle and pull the plugs striaght out. Don't yank the cluster around too much while doing this or you'll damage the plug solders on the pc board (not a big deal to fix). Once you have the instrument cluster apart its pretty obvious what screws hold the thing together. You need to get at the back of the temp guage - there should be two AA batteries that you can replace from Radio Shack part # 23-191 w/solder conections. Charge up the batteries before you put them in. version of this style e23. I have been told that they are If there are no batteries, look for bad solders at the plug pin connections at the circuit board - this was the problem with my speedo not working.
This probably happens when the instrument cluster bulbs get replaced and the cluster gets wrenched around.
Also - you may as well replace all the bulbs while you're in there.
